The Origin of Our Name

Ephyra is the name given to one of the stages of development of a jellyfish.  The life cycle of free-swimming scyphozoan jellyfish typically consists of three stages. A sessile polyp (scyphistoma) stage asexually buds off young medusae from its upper end to form Ephyra (see figure photographed at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California). Ephyra grows into the adult jellyfish.

We selected the name Ephyra because of the shape of the baby jellyfish with its many tentacles similar to a network reaching in all directions

Ephyra is also the name given to Kichyros, the capital of ancient Thesprotia built by the Pelasgian leader Thesprotos.
